Police Across New England Hunting ATM Thieves

LAWRENCE (CBS4) ― Lawrence Police and several other departments in New England are compiling information to catch thieves who are apparently making a living off stealing cash machines.

Reports of these types of robberies have been recorded in several areas across the region. "From Connecticut all the way to New Hampshire, we're seeing a lot of these things," said Chief John Romero of the Lawrence Police Department. "Because there are so many machines cropping up now and there are people – I won't say there is one group doing it – but there are people making a living hitting these ATM machines."

Police say the thieves are targeting lighter machines in these robberies. Although they have less money in them, police say they are lighter and are easier to make a get-away with.

The latest break in happened in Lawrence on Wednesday. In that robbery, the suspects used a sledge hammer to break through the wall. They walked across the store, pulled the ATM from the floor and carried it outside.

Romero says within two minutes, they are able to grab the ATM and shake it loose. Police say they do not target bank ATM's because they are too heavy to steal.

A task force has been formed to catch the thieves; unfortunately the suspects in the Lawrence ATM robbery were wearing masks and gloves, so they did not leave a lot of evidence behind.
