Romney To Return Contributions Given By Aggregate
BOSTON (CBS4) ―
Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney said he will give back nearly $3,900 in campaign contributions given to him in 2002 and 2003 by employees of Aggregate Industries, the Big Dig concrete supplier who is currently at the center of a fraud case.
According to Prosecutors, Aggregate used 5,000 loads of inferior, sub-standard, poor quality concrete to build the tunnels for the Big Dig. The company delivered about 135,000 loads of concrete in all.
Six men are now charged in a scheme to defraud the government out of millions of dollars. All six are managers of the company, and according to the feds, the scheme has cost taxpayers at least $105 million.
Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey, who is a candidate for governor, also says she is giving back $600 in contributions from the concrete supplier.
Nancy Sterling, a spokeswoman for Aggregate, told the Associated Press that employees make contributions on their own without any input from the company.
