Retirement Board Rejects Arroyo's Disability Claim

BOSTON (AP) ― The Boston Retirement Board has rejected the disability pension application of a firefighter who competed in a bodybuilding contest six weeks after he reported he was permanently disabled and unable to work.

The board issued the ruling Monday on the grounds that Albert Arroyo's application submitted in April is incomplete.

Arroyo was fired on Monday for defying an order to return to work. He can appeal.

The board also voted to hire a forensic accountant to conduct a fraud assessment of hundreds of past disability pension claims.

Members voted to launch a search to replace executive officer Robert Tierney, who stepped down Monday. A backlog of nearly 100 firefighter disability claims accumulated under Tierney, which allowed them to collect tax-free salaries pending a decision.
