North Andover High School Runner Dies After Race

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (WBZ) ― A senior co-captain of the track team at North Andover High School died Monday, a week after he collapsed at a meet.

Alex Farese, 17, collapsed moments after he finished a 400-meter race against Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School on April 14, according to the Eagle-Tribune.

He was rushed to Tufts Medical Center in Boston. He never regained consciousness.

His mother told the paper an abnormal rhythm may have caused his heart to stop beating. Roseanne Farese said her son did not have any history of heart or fainting problems.

Farese had been accepted to Johns Hopkins and Carnegie Mellon and planned to major in chemical engineering, according to the Eagle Tribune.

The high school was closed for spring vacation.  It will be open all week for students who would like to meet with counselors and teachers.
