Missing Lawrence Soldier's Unit Returning Home

Search For Alex Jimenez Will Continue

BOSTON (WBZ) ― The search for a Lawrence soldier missing in Iraq will continue, even now that his unit is coming home. Army Specialist Alex Jimenez and two other soldiers were abducted in May when their unit was ambushed.

Their commanding officer, Colonel Michael Kershaw, spoke with WBZ-TV via satellite from Iraq Friday. He says the unit replacing them in Iraq will take over the search for Jimenez and his missing comrade. The body of the third soldier was recovered in the Euphrates River.

Col. Kershaw said Iraqis have also been instrumental in helping to find the missing soldiers.

"Most of the information that we've gotten, the weapons that we recently found and some other information were given to us by the local populous," Kershaw told WBZ-TV's Paula Ebben. "This is in fact the most valuable information, and it's the ones that have gotten us the most leads."

Weapons belonging to Jimenez and Private Bryron Fouty were found last month outside a home in Iraq, several miles from the spot they were kidnapped. Their dog tags were found in June.

Col. Kershaw says he has been in constant communication with the fathers of both soldiers and that will continue once his unit returns stateside.
