Victim In Fourth Highway Attack Follows Suspects
by Ron Sanders
East Brookfield (CBS4) ―
Another driver is lucky to escape injury after being targeted in a frightening string of highway attacks.
Someone is throwing heavy objects at cars on Route 49 on the East Brookfield and Spencer town line. It's happened four times this week. Luckily, the driver hit Monday night noticed something that could help police crack the case.
Just 24 hours after the third truck windshield was smashed on the same stretch of Route 49 south, an SUV was hit on Monday night. The windshield was smashed by something believed to be a rock, thrown from an oncoming car.
"He said he observed somebody stand up and throw something through the sunroof. There were two people in the car. He immediately turned around," said East Brookfield Police Chief William Cournoyer.
The motorist, who was not hurt, tried to catch the small black car. He flagged down an east brookfield cruiser, but the car got away.
Windshields of a car carrier and a tractor-trailer were struck by rocks on the same stretch of Route 49 south last Monday and Wednesday.
There were two minor injuries but no hospitalizations and no accidents.
Spencer police said another sport utility vehicle may have been struck last Friday but that went unreported. State Police are also investigating, and right now there's no clear motive.
"If the person hears my voice and realizes how much endangerment they're doing and they stop that would not be the total of what we want but i would rather not have anyone hurt, " said State Police Lt. Raymond Chapdelaine
East Brookfield, Spencer and State Police have all put extra patrols on the stretch of Route 49.
Investigators are hoping to get some fingerprints from a plastic bottle of suntan lotion that smashed through a truck windshield on Sunday. They also believe 'copy-cats' are a possibility.
Anyone with information about this case is urged to call police.
