Twenty years ago, Dr. Bill Henderson was named principal at the Ohearn School in Dorchester.
He had a radical idea -- Dr. Henderson wanted to include kids with physical and mental disabilities alongside the other kids at the elementary school.
"We were committed to make it work, so were the parents," said Dr. Henderson.
And maybe he knew what he was talking about. Bill Henderson is blind, yet he earned advanced degrees in education while not being able to see.
His work at the Ohearn became recognized nationally, and Tuesday Dr. Henderson retired, but not before they re-named the school after him. The Ohearn is now the Dr. William Henderson Inclusion School.
"It's unusual that we name a public building after someone who is still with us, but today we do just that," said Mayor Tom Menino.
The kids then put on a display of African dancing, and Irish step dancing, several different races taking part in ethnically diverse displays that were ingrained in them by Dr. Henderson.
The teacher, who cannot see, yet has led the way for thousands of kids over the past 20 years.
