Actor Michael J. Fox delivered the keynote address at Monday's session of an international biotechnology conference at the Convention Center.
Putting a face on a debilatating disease, Fox thanked scientists and investors who have gathered at the convention.
But the popular actor says much more needs to be done to cure diseases like Parkinson's, which he has suffered from since 1991.
"Levodopa is the gold standard treatment for Parkinson's disease but it's a little frustrating the best drug we have is one that has been around for 40 years," said Fox.
A crowd of 2,400 also watched a video presentation on the lastest clinical trials for new drugs.
Since his diagnosis, Fox has raised millions of dollars for research.
"Foundations like the Michael J. Fox foundation provide the cash, to get these ideas from the bench to bed side," said BIO Convention CEO James Greenwood.
Fox pointed out there are 30,000 diseases and only 10,000 cures. Bridging that gap will require million of dollars in more research money.
Senator Ted Kennedy was suppose to be on stage but instead addressed the crowd by video tape, saying the government should do more.
