Police in riot gear worked to contain hundreds of protestors in a chaotic scene near Faneuil Hall Sunday night.
A number of groups in town to protest a massive biotech convention converged in the Faneuil Hall area of the city, and spread out through nearby streets.
Many in the raucous crowds wore masks and bandanas to cover their faces, while they chanted and shouted obscenities at police.
The crowd was loud, but not violent. They eventually dispersed. No arrests were made and there were no injuries.
Boston Police were preparing for the possibility that anarchists would descend on the city, in conjunction with the BIO International Convention at the Convention Center. Thousands of people from around the world are taking part in the four-day conference - the largest of its kind.
Federal law enforcers issued a security bulletin in advance of the conference.
Demonstrations at this same conference in Boston in 2000 -- while orderly -- closed streets and required extra police.
"We spent a lot of time preparing," Boston police Commissioner Edward Davis told WBZ earlier this week. "We've been to Chicago, we've been to San Francisco, and we've done our homework and we believe we're up to the task right now."
An organized march earlier Sunday to protest the building of a Boston University bio-lab, drew a smaller, less unruly crowd.
Additional protests are expected throughout the four-day conference.
