A high school wrestler was killed on Tuesday after he was hit by his friend's car while jogging.
Frank DeMeo, 19, of Stow, was a senior at Nashoba Regional High School and one of four captains of the wrestling team.
According to reports, DeMeo did not meet his weight class during a weigh-in at school, so he decided to go for a run to shed some extra pounds before a scheduled 4:30 p.m. match. Some team members got in a car and drove behind him as he ran along Fox Run Road.
According to the D.A., he was approached from behind by the car driven by teammate David Hayden, 17, of Stow. Two other wrestling teammates, both juveniles, were passengers in the car.
At some point the car hit DeMeo. Hayden called 911 and the two passengers ran to a nearby house to notify an adult of what happened.
Emergency crews rushed DeMeo to UMass Medical Center in Worcester, where he died at about 4 p.m.
"This is a senseless tragedy," District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. said in a statement.
"This calls out for young people to be more careful in and out of moving vehicles. You can never underestimate the power of a moving vehicle."
No charges have been filed at this point in the investigation.
"Just a terrible tragedy," said Chief Vincent Alfano with the Bolton Police Department. "We've ruled out at this point alcohol, speed or drugs."
Demeo was ranked 5th in the state in his weight class. Grief counselors were at the school Wednesday.
