Advocates Say Booster Seat Law Would Save Lives

BOSTON (WBZ) ― Lawmakers and pediatricians are calling for a booster seat law in Massachusetts.

They want the use of booster seats for children up until their eighth birthday -- or until they reach the height of four-foot-nine.

Thirty-eight other states have similar laws.

Current Massachusetts law requires children up to age five and 40 pounds to be in a child passenger restraint.

From age five through 12, the current law only requires use of a safety belt.

At a Statehouse news conference today, advocates said car accidents are the number-one killer of young children. Less than three percent of the six- and seven-year-olds who died in car crashes in the U-S between 2001 and 2005 were in booster seats.

State Senator Steve Baddour, chairman of the Transportation Committee, predicts swift passage.
