Talk of the Red Sox obtaining Minnesota Twins pitcher Johan Santana for the 2008 year is over after the left-handed ace was traded to the New York Mets, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported Tuesday afternoon.
The Red Sox had been in the game with talk of luring Santana to the team. However, the pending deal with the Mets is said to be a 6- or 7-year contract.
As part of the trade, the Mets agreed to send the Twins outfielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey.
The Red Sox aren't the only team to lose out on the trade. The New York Yankees had imposed a deadline in December for the Twins to make up their minds on the Yankees trade offer for Santana.
That deadline came and went, leaving the Red Sox in the driver seat...until this week when the Mets landed the lefty pitcher.
