Boston city councilors are calling for tougher inspections of city restaurants in the wake of the blaze that killed two
firefighters.
The fire at a Chinese restaurant in
West Roxbury was caused by grease that collected in a ceiling crawl space.
Councilor John Tobin proposed requiring restaurants to hire contractors several times yearly to inspect cooking ventilation systems.
Councilor Sam Yoon said the fire may have highlighted an overlooked danger that regulations should cover.
Mayor Thomas Menino defended the city's inspection system. He said he'd wait for a report from the Fire Department before endorsing any changes.
A spokesman for the Massachusetts Hospitality Association -- which represents many city restaurants -- said his group would consider the proposal for tougher inspections.
