Cambridge Football Player Critical After Collapse

WAYLAND (WBZ) ― A high school football player is in critical condition after he was injured at a football game at Cochituate Field in Wayland Friday night.

Wayland police said the 17-year-old high school junior plays football for Buckingham Brown and Nichols school in Cambridge. While in the middle of a huddle during a scrimmage against Wayland High School, the boy collapsed, police officials said.

Police could not say what type of injuries the boy suffered but school officials said other players and witnesses did not see any obvious collision or tackle that may have caused him harm.

He was airlifted to Boston Medical Hospital where school officials say he is in intensive care.

The boy's injury happened the same night that another high school football player collapsed on the field.

Holliston High School junior Joey Larracey collapsed during a scrimmage after he was hit in the chest. His lungs took on fluid and he died later that night at a hospital.
