Former Mayor Vincent "Buddy" Cianci was released Wednesday from a Boston halfway house, another milestone on his path toward freedom and the beginning of a more permanent return to Rhode Island.
The disgraced politician has been placed in home confinement as part of his sentence for racketeering conspiracy. He will be released from federal supervision on July 28, said Mike Truman, a spokesman for the Bureau of Prisons.
Cianci nephew Brad Turchetta said the former mayor would live inside an in-law apartment at his family's East Greenwich home.
One of the country's longest serving mayors, Cianci presided over the revitalization of New England's second-largest city but ultimately was snared during an FBI investigation into rampant City Hall corruption.
Convicted in 2002, Cianci was released from federal prison last month and has been working at a sales and marketing job at The 903 Residences, a Providence condominium complex.
