Cianci Lands Job At Luxurious Boston Hotel
PROVIDENCE (AP) ―
Former Providence Mayor Vincent "Buddy" Cianci will start work at a luxurious Boston hotel when he gets out of federal prison later this month.
Cianci, currently behind bars on corruption charges, will work in sales, marketing and public relations for Fifteen Beacon. The boutique hotel is located in the shadow of the Massachusetts Statehouse.
"He's going to have an office right inside the hotel. He's obviously an expert in sales and marketing. Look what he's done for downtown Providence," George Regan, a spokesman for hotel owner Paul Roiff, told the AP Tuesday. "We think he'll be a great addition."
Cianci was sent to federal prison in 2002 following his conviction on a single count of racketeering conspiracy.
Prosecutors said he oversaw widespread corruption during his time in city hall, but supporters of the colorful former mayor credit him with revitalizing downtown Providence and making it a center of arts and culture.
He is expected to be released May 30 from the federal prison at Fort Dix, N.J., into a halfway house in Boston. Cianci will start his new job in early June.
Regan said Roiff, a Providence native, was approached by a mutual friend of his and Cianci's who said the former mayor would be in Boston and needed a job there.
"Paul said, 'Oh, terrific,"' Regan said.
He said the hotel is planning a celebration for Cianci on his first day.
Rooms at Fifteen Beacon cost from $400 a night to more than $1,000 a night for a one bedroom suite.
"It'll be quite a contrast between the halfway house," Regan said.
Cianci is likely to feel at home at the fancy hotel. During his corruption trial, he lived in the Presidential Suite at the Biltmore Hotel in Providence.
Fifteen Beacon is still working on what Cianci's work hours will be, Regan said, and added that Cianci will be paid for the work. Cianci has to reimburse the government for his room and board.
