William Bulger's Former Law Partner Disbarred

BOSTON (AP) ― The state's highest court has disbarred a one-time law partner of former state Senate President William Bulger for advising a client to lie to a federal grand jury investigating Bulger's fugitive mobster brother, James "Whitey" Bulger.

Thomas Finnerty was disbarred last week for advising the client to lie in 1998 during an investigation into Whitey Bulger's contacts with relatives and friends.

The Board of Bar Overseers says the 72-year-old Finnerty will be barred from practicing law for at least eight years and may then apply for reinstatement.

Finnerty filed a letter of resignation with the Supreme Judicial Court on May 21, citing an ongoing investigation into alleged misconduct.

Supreme Judicial Court Justice Margot Botsford accepted Finnerty's resignation and ordered his disbarment last Wednesday.
