Proposed Casino Could Expand With New Land

by Joe Shortsleeve
BOSTON (WBZ) ― The proposed casino development in Middleboro could be getting bigger. As you know, the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe hopes to build a world class gaming facilty in the town. There is now news the tribe is about to pick up another big chunk of land.

The news is expected to be official on Tuesday. As we have been reporting, the Mashpee tribe already has purchased two large parcels in Middleboro. I am told on Tuesday -- most likely -- they will buy another 200 acres of land adjacent to their current holdings -- bringing the total amount of land to about 550 acres.

The land is located between Route 44 and Precinct Street, and now all the way up to Thompson Street. A spokesperson for the tribe says Wampanoag Chairman Glenn Marshall feels this new purchase would be necessary because of the size of the resort in the works.

Ultimately, it will include a 36-hole golf course, an indoor water park, and perhaps 1,500 hotel rooms -- never mind the casino itself.

This new parcel of land will be purchased from three members of a Middleboro family.

The tribe says they plan to go ahead with the development and offer a lower level of gambling like electronic bingo if Gov. Deval Patrick says he is against casino gambling. If the tribe goes the lower level route, the state gets nothing.
