New Scream Feature Could Help Protect Your Phone

BOSTON (CBS4) ― An innovative, new way to protect your cell phone will soon go on sale online.

It made some people smile on the streets on Boston, but this new anti-theft technology is serious business. "I think it is a pretty interesting feature… its kind a fun," said Greg Vasil.

When asked if he would buy the feature…. "I might," he said.

You pay $5 a month for the scream. If some one steals your phone, call your provider and like exploding dye after a bank robbery, a thief should be easy to spot.

"I think it's a good feature if it could be universally recognized as someone stealing a cell phone, but I don't think I would buy it," said Chris Flammer.

The software made by a British company called Synchronica can also -- with a single command -- wipe out sensitive data on your phone, or lock it so a thief cant get to it.

"You could have email you could bank passwords stored on there you could all kinds of personal information on these devices," said Richard Stott of Synchronica, Inc.

While this is clearly geared toward the business person who has sensitive information on their phone, there are some other applications.

You could use it an alarm and you are on a bad date and you need to leave," said Darleen Parrion. "Maybe you would buy it… maybe I would for that."

The only way to stop the screaming is too remove the battery, but the horror film shrieking resumes when the battery is replaced.

And get this. It doesn't matter if your phone is set on silent or vibrate -- the scream over rides it..

The company Synchronica plans to make the scream anti-theft device available to consumers for $4.95 a month, starting next month.
