Charlie Card Boosts Revenue, Slows Fare Jumpers

BOSTON (WBZ) ― The MBTA is crediting its new Charlie Card with a significant increase in revenues. One reason for the increase is because the automated system makes it harder to avoid fares.

The MBTA had projected the new system would boost revenues 3 percent but now expect an increase of 9 percent, or about $21 million, by the end of June.

"The numbers that we have seem to indicate strongly that fare evasion was greater throughout the system than we thought," MBTA General Manager Daniel A. Grabauskas told the Boston Globe.

Additional security cameras, higher fare gates and the presence of additional T workers are also helping to deter fare evaders.
