It appears the man known as Clark Rockefeller was setting up a new life for himself and his kidnapped daughter in Baltimore when he was captured over the weekend.
Rockefeller, 48, was arraigned in Baltimore Monday, two days after he was arrested and his 7-year-old daughter Reigh Boss was found safe.
He is accused of kidnapping Reigh during a supervised visit in the Back Bay July 27. He was arrested Saturday in Baltimore after police lured him away from his carriage house by telling him his boat was taking on water. He left the girl alone in the home and that's where investigators found her.
She was re-united with her mother Sandra Boss a short time later.
"They're doing well. Mother and daughter are doing fine," Boston Police Deputy Superintendent Thomas Lee told the Early Show Monday.
Rockefeller is charged with felony custodial kidnapping, assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
Lee said it appears Rockefeller was preparing to start over in Maryland at the time of arrest.
"Based on the purchase of that carriage house and certain other information," Lee said, "We believe he was going to re-start a new life in Baltimore."
Rockefeller bought the carriage house from Obsidian Realty. Julie Gochar, managing partner of the company, said Rockefeller, or Chip Smith as she and her fellow workers knew him as, bought the property with a cashier's check in mid-July. Gochar said this is not an uncommon process.
According to the Boston Globe, Rockefeller paid about $450,000 for the home.
Gochar said Rockefeller contacted her company in 2007, claiming to be from Chile and looking to relocate to the Baltimore area. Gochar said Rockefeller represented himself as a single parent relocating with his daughter.
For several months, Obsidian Realty not only helped Rockefeller find a home, they made arrangements for him to stay in the area during his search. They also granted him temporary access to their real estate office so he could use the Internet.
Lee told CBS it appears Rockefeller was planning the kidnapping for awhile.
"We understand his boat has been down there for at least two years and he had been travelling in the area for sometime over last year he's been down there in that area."
Rockefeller and Sandra Boss divorced in 2007. She was so concerned about her former husband's name changes that she asked a judge to restrict his access to their daughter. According to published reports, he refused to provide his true identity during the divorce proceedings and ended up losing any chance at custody of Reigh.
"That's still a mystery and still an active part of our investigation is to find out who really is Clark Rockefeller," Lee said.
