DSS Head Defends Agency's Action In Poutre Case

BOSTON (CBS4) ― DSS has been under fire lately after an 11-year-old girl was beaten into a coma while she was in a foster home.

Now, the agency's director is firing back.

Commissioner Harry Spence says his staff and several health professionals believed Haleigh Poutre's injuries were self-inflicted.

Spence says DSS took the proper precautions at that point. He also claims the DSS intended to move the girl away from her adoptive parents a week before she went into the hospital.

Earlier this week, the state's highest court ruled Haleigh could be taken off life support, but she then showed signs of improvement.

Her stepfather could face murder charges, if she dies.
