Wi-Fi Service Begins On MBTA Commuter Rail
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
Commuters riding the Worcester-Framingham commuter line got a pleasant surprise Wednesday: they can officially start using Wi-Fi service aboard the trains.
That means the rail's 18,000 daily passengers can now plug in their laptops, cell phones and other electronic devices to the internet for free during their rides to and from South Station.
MBTA officials say at least one car on every train will carry a wireless router.
This is the first step in the T's test plan for outfitting commuter rail trains with Wi-Fi.
Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray says the program is a first step toward improving Internet access throughout the commuter rail system. Murray also said the program will help improve productivity.
Other commuter rail lines may also have Wi-Fi access from time to time.
