A mother claims her two children are suffering from chemical burns after a trip to the CoCo Key Water Resort in Danvers last week.
Kristen Baker of Litchfield, N.H., told WBZ her daughter, Emily, 9, and son Austin, 11, went to the park on an overnight trip with friends and returned home Friday with something that looked like really bad sunburn.
She took them to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua where they were diagnosed with chemical burns, most likely from the chlorine in the hot tub.
Baker said Emily has burns on her back and Austin has blisters on his chin.
The water park at the Sheraton Hotel on Ferncroft Road told WBZ the hot tub water was tested and the chlorine levels were in line with the Department of Public Health regulations.
"When our chlorine levels are at the higher end of the range suggested by the DPH, children that spend an extended period of time in a spa are more likely to have this type of reaction," the company said in a statement Monday afternoon.
As a precaution, the resort drained the tub and closed it to the public until an outside expert can examine it.
CoCo Key told WBZ this is the first time they've had an incident like this.
They are looking into changing the age limit for the hot tub to 16 and over.
The $30 million CoCo Key Water Resort opened last May. It has four water slides, an adventure river, dip-in theatre, wave beach and several activity pools.
Resort officials say 190,000 gallons of water flow through the parks filtration system every three hours.
