'Pumpkin Man' Fights Sex Offender Status

CAPE COD (WBZ) ― A man listed as one of the most dangerous sex offenders in the state has been living a secret life on Cape Cod, and it has taken the state two years to tell nearby families that he moved there.

David Owen Cobb, known as the 'Pumpkin Man', served 11 years in New Hampshire for attempted sexual assault on a child and sexual contact with a child.

He was an English teacher at the prestigious Philips Academy in Andover in the 1990s. Authorities caught him with a bag full of children's underwear, pornographic pictures and a pumpkin mask – thereby earning his nickname.

Now Cobb lives in South Dennis, where a poster just recently went up in the police station notifying residents that a Level 3 sex offender was living nearby.

"For him to live in a neighborhood for two years without notifying any families or anything, it's just not right," one neighbor told WBZ.

Despite his conviction, David Cobb continues to insist he is innocent and refuses to get treatment. He told WBZ's Christina Hager that the pictures he was caught with were art collages he created, and that he never hurt any children.

Cobb's lawyer is fighting his classification as a Level 3 sex offender, which is why it took two years to notify residents.

According to the state's Sex Offender Registry Board, it usually takes about four months to sort out such legal appeals. Those appeals can drag out longer, the board said, if the case involves testimony and legal arguments, which appears to be what happened in Cobb's case.
