Suspended Surgeon Sued For Malpractice

Dr. Loren Borud Suspended After Sleeping Episode

BOSTON (WBZ) ― A plastic surgeon whose license was suspended by the state is now being sued for malpractice.

Dr. Loren Borud lost his license after he was fired by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center after he appeared to fall asleep while performing a liposuction.

The state Board of Registration in Medicine announced Thursday it had suspended Borud's license.

On Friday, the law firm of Gorovitz and Borten announced it is filing a malpractice lawsuit against Borud over the June 27 liposuction surgery.

Borud, 44, has struggled with substance abuse for six years, according to the board.

He allegedly closed his eyes during an operation on June 27 and had to be roused by a resident. Afterwards, he was ordered to take a drug test. The board said he told a resident he had had "several" alcoholic drinks and asked that resident to provide him with a clean urine sample. The resident refused.

Borud never took a drug test and was fired on July 18.

The law firm is expected to hold a news conference about the malpractice suit on Monday.
