It was a killing that outraged the city.
One year ago, 13-year-old
Steven Odom was struck down by an stray bullet just steps from his Dorchester home.
On Saturday, friends and family gathered to remember him.
They sang in the streets of Dorchester, but it was not a song of joy. Instead, it was pain -- pain over the still unsolved murder of the teen.
One year to the day after Steven Odom was shot and killed, well over 100 family and friends gathered at the spot where he fell.
"Everyday since October 4, 2007, I have cried everyday," said Steven's mother, Kim. "But Steven's death was not in vain
It starts right here."
Steven was a churchgoing eighth grader who loved to play the drums. He was shot only steps from his home. Police say he was not the intended target. "My brother had a bright future and that was taken away from him," said Steven's sister, Dionne.
Local leaders used the occasion to mobilize the community to stop the violence that ends lives much too soon. "You don't know what Steven could have become," said Ministry Rodney X of the Nation of Islam. "He could have become another Barack Obama
another Jesse Jackson
another Al Sharpton."
The murder of a 13-year-old boy has led to tears every single day, but it also led to dozens of people out of the street, looking for a solution.
After some promising initial leads, police still haven't found out who killed Steven Odom.
