Doug Mirabelli Arrives At Fenway In Police Escort

Viewer's Voice: Doug Mirabelli's Escort

by Pauline Chiou
BOSTON (CBS4) ― The excitement over the latest Red Sox-Yankees series is not confined to the field. Catcher Doug Mirabelli was in California on Monday when he was traded back to the Red Sox. That trade triggered a cross country adventure, which included a police escort just so he could play in Monday's game.

The state police escort left from Logan Airport and went down Storrow Drive. People pulled of the side of the road as officials transported newly reacquired Mirabelli to Fenway Park. The Red Sox did pay for the escort, which dropped off Mirabelli right in front of the park with only minutes to spare before the highly anticipated Boston, New York match up.

Doug Mirabelli changed into his old uniform in the police cruiser on the way to Fenway. "It looked like Superman coming out of a phone booth," said Rich Conte, a Red Sox fan. "It was pretty cool."

At Perfection Auto Body, in Watertown, the Red Sox fans working here see Mirabelli's return as the spark Tim Wakefield needed. "I was psyched," said Sox fan Jimmy Hill. "I was really, really happy he came back. I want to welcome him back, and I'm sure Tim Wakefield is as happy as can be."

But Mirabelli himself didn't think he would make it to Monday's game on time. "I just put my uniform on in the back of the police car. That was fun. I was buck naked in the back of the seat."

Some viewers emailed CBS4 saying a ball game was no reason for a police escort, but the people we asked had no problem with it – especially since the team picked up the cost. "I didn't think anything of that," said Red Sox fan Kara Muzzola. "I thought it was kind of neat they got him in at the last second."

"The Boston Red Sox paid for it, so it was cool," said Conte.
