A driver who crashed her car into Brockton Hospital, killing two, appeared in court on Thursday.
Jane Berghold, 76, was arraigned on two counts of motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation.
While in court, Berghold told WBZ's Kate Merrill she feels terrible, the whole situation is awful and this is a hard time for her. "She's very ill," said Berghold's lawyer Kevin Reddington. "She's very upset, as you can imagine. She's a lovely woman who's done nothing wrong in her life other than be a great wife and a great mother."
Police reports say Berghold pressed the accelerator instead of the brake when she drove the car through the front doors of the hospital's radiation therapy unit in October.
The crash killed 58-year-old Dr. Mark Vasa of Norwell and 59-year-old Susan Plante of Bridgewater, a secretary in the unit.
Berghold, a breast cancer patient, was driving to the hospital to meet with doctors when the accident occurred.
Plante's nephew Michael Plante showed up before Berghold's arraignment and told Berghold they forgave her, and the family supports her 100 percent. Merrill says Michael sat behind Berghold throughout the entire arraignment.
Berghold is due back in court on March 24.
