West Nile Virus Found In Second Boston Community
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
A second Boston community has tested positive for West Nile Virus, according to the Boston Public Health Commission.
Officials say the illness was detected in mosquitoes collected in Jamaica Plain. Earlier this week, West Nile was found in a mosquito pool in West Roxbury.
The Boston Public Health Commission says no human cases of the West Nile Virus have been confirmed in the city.
Officials are urging people to get rid of any standing water around their homes to help reduce the amount of mosquitoes in the area. This includes water found in garbage cans, recycle bins and wheelbarrows. Standing water can also be found in old tires stored outdoors and gutters.
People are advised to limit outdoor activity during prime mosquito time (after sunset), but if you must go outside during that time, be sure to wear clothes that cover most of your body.
People should also make sure their window and door screens are in good repair, said Dr. Anita Barry, director of the Communicable Disease Control Division at the Commission.
