The man whose career ended in scandal was in town on Thursday talking about ethics.
Former New York Governor Elliot Spitzer, who was driven from office by a
prostitution scandal, isn't talking about his ethical issues, rather ethics in government and business.
The faculty director of the Edmond J. Safra Foundation Center for Ethics, Lawrence Lessig, acknowledged Spitzer's personal scandal in his introduction, but called him "the most important living prosecutor on a wide range of corruption."
"No one doubts what he did was wrong to his family, state and supporters and to himself," he said.
Spitzer spoke for more than an hour. He said when financial institutions chose between integrity and profits, they make the wrong choice. His speech focused on government response to the world financial crisis.
After his speech, Spitzer was asked if he thought getting busted with an escort was a conspiracy exposed by his opponents.
"I resigned because it was the right thing to do," he answered.
Since his resignation, Spitzer has worked in his father's real estate firm and taught political science at City College in New York.
The madam who says she supplied escorts to Spitzer says she sent a letter to Harvard in protest.
Kristen Davis posted on her Web site that she would have gone to the speech but her parole prevented her from leaving New York.
