After Explosion, Everett To Develop Emergency Plan

EVERETT (WBZ) ― Less than a week after a tanker truck carrying thousands of gallons of gasoline exploded in Everett, officials will meet Monday to discuss the city's response to the massive fire.

In the early hours of last Tuesday, a tanker truck carrying 9,400 gallons of gasoline overturned in the Sweetser Circle rotary In Everett. The truck exploded sending a river of fire down Main Street, destroying two triple-deckers and forcing more than 100 people into the street in the bitter cold.

Luckily, no one was seriously hurt.

On Monday Everett city officials are meeting to discus emergency crews' response, and Mayor John Hanlon says he hopes the meeting will also lead to a written emergency response plan for any future disasters.

While he appreciates the work of volunteers who came forward to help after the accident, Hanlon says there was a lot of confusion and "too many people all trying to do the same exact thing."

Hanlon says the 47 people left homeless by the fire are being put up at local hotels, but the city and American Red Cross hope to find them new apartments by Thursday.

So far, the driver of the tanker truck, Chad LaFrance of Dover, New Hampshire, has only been cited for speeding. Although the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office says he could face additional criminal charges.
