Former Turnpike Authority chairman Matt Amorello broke the conflict of interest law when he sweetened the agency's sick time policy right before resigning, according to the state Ethics Commission.
Amorello gave up his post at the Authority after last summer's fatal Big Dig ceiling collapse. The commission found that Amorello's sick time policy change allowed workers to cash in up to 50 percent of their unused days up from 20 percent.
Amorello and three other workers on the former chairman's staff were affected by the change.
Amorello faces three alleged violations during a public hearing. State law prohibits state workers from participating in matters in which he or she has financial interest. Each violation is punishable with a $2,000 fine.
