BOSTON (WBZ) ― Was it Whitey Bulger who was spotted in Sicily last April?

The FBI is now trying to figure that out, and they are asking for the public's help.

The bureau released new photos and a video of an unknown couple that was taken in Taormina, Sicily. They show a man and a woman the FBI believes resembles the fugitive mob boss and his longtime girlfriend, Catherine Greig.

"This is probably one of the most interesting sightings I've seen," said former state police detective Bob Long.

Officials say they did perform a facial recognition analysis, but they were unable to figure out if the photos were in fact of Bulger and Greig.

"I don't know why Whitey would wear a baseball hat because every picture that's seen of him is with a baseball hat," Long said. "Sometimes mistakes like that is why they get caught."

This is not the first time video of Bulger has been released. In March 2006, the Bulger Task Force released a 25-year-old video that showed a man believed to be the mob boss at an auto shop on Lancaster Street near North Station in Boston.

That location was, at one point, believed to be Bulger's headquarters until he found out it was being bugged by police.

Read the full story and watch the surveillance video.

Bulger, the former leader of the Winter Hill Gang, has been on the run since 1995, when he was tipped off by FBI agent John Connolly that he was about to be indicted on racketeering charges.

Bulger, 78, who is on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list, is also wanted for 19 murders.

There is currently a $1 million reward for Bulger's capture.

Authorities have received hundreds of tips about possible Bulger sightings over the years. Most of them have turned out to be Bulger lookalikes.
