Witness Talks About Franconia Police Shooting
by Karen Anderson
FRANCONIA, N.H. (WBZ) ―
For the first time, we are hearing from an eyewitness who watched his friend gun down a New Hampshire police officer.
Franconia police officer Bruce McKay was shot and then run over Friday night by a man with whom he had bad blood for years.
Some claim both cop and killer were on a collision course. They've had a number of run-ins. Court documents show details of an arrest in 2003, when Liko Kenney was charged with assaulting McKay.
"Just to see the fear in his eyes, how scared, he was, he wanted nothing to do with this and it turned out so bad in both ways," said Caleb Macaulay, who was in the passenger seat when Liko Kenney's shot Cpl. McKay four times and then ran him over Friday night. "He was a great kid, he really was, we were just trying to get home. I've never seen him so scared in his life."
Kenney was then shot and killed by passerby Gregory Floyd. Relatives say Kenney, whose Olympic skier Bode Miller's cousin, and McKay had a long, contentious relationship.
"It was a confrontational relationship that just escalated and exploded," said Bill Kenney, Liko's Uncle. "Fairly natural in a way."
The Franconia Police Chief Mark Montminy wouldn't comment on the pair's past. He says McKay was the most fair and professional officer he knew. "He was very dedicated and very interested in doing the best job that he could. Always checking on new developments, new laws, making sure that everything was done properly and done fairly."
McKay leaves behind a young daughter and a fiancée. More than 5,000 officers are expected to attend a funeral service for the corporal Thursday morning.
"I'm very sorry for the family, for the children of that officer, but we lost such a great person," said Macaulay. McKay is one of just three full time officers here on the Franconia force. Calling hours for McKay are at the town hall on Wednesday night.
