General Motors Corp. will stall on
closing its parts distribution center in Norton for at least 14 months.
Congressman Barney Frank announced Thursday he had met with GM chief executive Fritz Henderson and the company had agreed to delay the closing.
Frank had argued that closing the Mass. plant and consolidating northeast truck shipping to a single location in Philadelphia would have negative environmental effects.
Mark Ridenour, chairman of United Auto Workers Union Local 422, said Frank's announcement had boosted morale.
The union said closing the service and parts warehousing and distribution center would leave about 66 union workers jobless.
The Norton facility serves GM dealers in New England and parts of New York state.
