The Red Sox have released backup catcher
George Kottaras.
According to
WBZ's Joe Giza, Kottaras was let go a few days ago and there was no formal announcement.
With Jason Varitek ready to be the backup for Victor Martinez in 2010, the Sox had no room for Kottaras, who served as Tim Wakefield's catcher.
Kottaras is 26 years old.
He hit .237 with one home run and ten RBI's in 45 games last season.
He came to the Red Sox from San Diego in 2006 in the David Wells trade.
