One of the 17 Gloucester teens who is pregnant says there was "definitely no pact" among the girls to have children out of wedlock.
Lindsey Oliver told ABC's Good Morning America that the city's high rate of pregnancies was "unlucky" and a "coincidence."
Oliver is the first of the pregnant teens to speak publicly since
Time magazine posted a story last week that said some of the 17 girls had made "a pact to get pregnant and raise their babies together."
Principal Joseph Sullivan told
the magazine "seven or eight sophomore girls" had the agreement. All the girls were reportedly under the age of 16.
Oliver is 17. She said a group of girls who were already pregnant decided to help each other finish school and raise their kids. She said her pregnancy was unplanned.
Oliver's comments come a day after Gloucester Mayor Carolyn Kirk said there was no evidence of a pact.
Sullivan has not commented since the Time article was published.
