Patrick Signs Bill To Save Salem School Jobs
BOSTON (AP) ―
Governor Deval Patrick has signed legislation that will help Salem keep 60 school employees on the job.
The city had planned to start laying off about 15 teachers and 45 other workers last week because of an unexpected $4.7 million deficit.
State and Salem officials blame the former school business manager for mismanaging the finances and covering it up.
A bill filed by Patrick earlier this week allows the city to borrow up to $1 million or spread the deficit over seven years.
Under existing law, municipalities are prohibited from borrowing for operating expenditures or a known operating deficit.
The bill also supports Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll's plan to consolidate administrative functions between the city and the schools in an effort to save money.
