Patrick Rescinds Romney Immigration Arrest Plan

Jon Keller's Political Blog

BOSTON (CBS4) ― Governor Patrick has formally rescinded a federal-state agreement signed by the Romney administration that would have allowed state troopers to arrest illegal immigrants in the course of their normal duties.

Patrick is proposing a new initiative that would allow prison officials to start deportation proceedings against inmates who are illegal immigrants.

The governor's new proposal would involve about a dozen Department of Correction workers operating out of the prison-classification centers at M-C-I Concord and M-C-I Framingham. They would review the immigration status of convicts and consider them for deportation.

Patrick says the shift would free troopers to focus on gun, gang and drug crime, while removing problematic illegal aliens from the state after they serve their prison sentence.
