Prosecutors Rest In Poutre Stepfather Trial

SPRINGFIELD (AP) ― Prosecutors have rested their case in the trial of a man accused of participating in a beating that left his stepdaughter with a near-fatal brain injury.

Haleigh Poutre was at the center of a right-to-die case in Massachusetts after she was beaten so severely in 2005 that doctors thought she would never recover.

Prosecutors say 34-year-old Jason Strickland and his late wife, Holli, both participated in repeated abuse of the girl.

Strickland's defense team is expected to begin presenting its case Wednesday afternoon. His lawyer told jurors earlier that Strickland will take the stand.

Haleigh, now 14, has improved to the point where she can write her name and feed herself. She lives in a rehabilitation hospital in Boston.
