Judge: Haleigh Must Now Take Part In Hearing
NORTHAMPTON (AP) ―
A judge now says that a brain-injured girl will take part in a hearing on her ability to testify against the stepfather accused of abusing her.
The case of
Haleigh Poutre became well known in 2005 when she recovered shortly after the state got court permission to remove her from life support. Now 14, she's a possible witness at the Oct. 30 trial of Jason Strickland of Westfield.
Strickland and his late wife, Haleigh's adoptive mother, were accused of causing injuries that left Poutre in a coma three years ago. Strickland has pleaded not guilty.
Judge Judd Carhart had ruled that
Poutre wouldn't have to testify. After a
prosecutor appealed, he ruled Friday that she will take part in the Oct. 1 hearing.
