Arrest In Attempted Rape Of Hanover 6-Year-Old

HANOVER (WBZ) ― A man kidnapped and attempted to rape a 6-year-old girl, but she managed to escape despite being in leg shackles, authorities said.

Police say Justin Shine, 26, abducted his young neighbor as she was riding her bike and took her back to his apartment at the Hanover Woods complex.

Officers arrested Shine after a brief struggle. He was hospitalized with what police say were self-inflicted wounds.

Police responded to the apartment complex shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday after the girl was reported missing by her mother. She'd been missing only about a half-hour, police said.

Police began a door-to-door search of the complex and found the girl outdoors, crying, they said.

She pointed to a neighbor's apartment which she had just escaped.

"The young girl was found to be shackled above her ankles, and blood was found on her arms and legs," Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz said. "She was crying and shaking."

Inside the apartment police found Shine, along with evidence that he'd attempted to rape the girl, authorities said. Police arrested Shine after a brief struggle.

"There's no doubt in my mind that their initiation of a door-to-door search of that apartment complex probably save this girl's life and prevented her from further injury," police Chief Walter Sweeney said.

Shine was charged with kidnapping, attempted rape, assault and battery and resisting arrest. He is expected to be arraigned Monday.
The girl was taken to a hospital for treatment. No word on her condition was available late Sunday morning.

Residents of the complex were shocked.

"There are a lot of kids out here," one woman said. "I'm really shocked that this happened in my back yard. I can't believe that that would go on here."
