Several Flights Still Cancelled, Delayed At Logan

BOSTON (WBZ) ―

The latest winter storm is long gone, but it's still wreaking havoc with holiday travel at Logan International Airport.

Massport spokesman Phil Orlandella says 64 arriving or departing flights were canceled as of early Friday afternoon at Logan. He reported air traffic delays into Boston of 56 minutes.

Axel and Magnus Robbins and their mom and dad hoped they would be running in Southern France by Friday - until they got to Logan Thursday and saw their flight was cancelled.

Now they're back at the airport and hoping to get out sometime soon.

"Seats are hard to come by. Now it's going to be a much a longer trip and it's pretty disappointing for the boys who are pretty excited to see their grandparents," says Karsten Robbins.

Travelers arriving at Logan Friday are finding long lines and canceled flights all across the boards.

Eileen Burke is headed to Washington, D.C. for the holidays. While she says she loves to people watch, she's seen enough. "I got here yesterday about 9 for an 11:30 plane. That was canceled. Put me on standby for a 1:30."

Now she's hoping to get out Friday afternoon.

Officials said more than 150 flights were canceled at the airport Thursday.
One of the airlines that took the hardest hit Thursday was Delta. They had to cancel or delay more than 2 dozen flights.

Why so many problems? A spokesperson for Delta told the Boston Globe that they had three major issues.

One of the biggest problems was "unexplained delays" in getting de-icing contractors to spray down jets before take off.

Another problem was that there were limited gates available, which restricted the airline's ability to take delayed passengers back to the airport from the runway.

Even worse, adding to the problems was that a lot of the planes crews simply had to punch their time clocks and leave because they were hitting their federal limits on hours worked.

Planes were grounded for hours because of poor visibility caused by the storm.
