Detectives investigating Imette St. Guillen's murder say carpet fibers have linked the lone suspect, Darryl Littlejohn, to the victim.
Forensic tests now show fibers taken from his home match those found on packaging tape used to cover up St. Guillen's body when it was found along a desolate road in Brooklyn February 25.
Earlier Thursday, a judge granted investigators permission to put Littlejohn in a lineup of possible suspects in a rape last October in the Forest Hills section of Queens.
Littlejohn's attorney, Kevin O'Donnell, says his client was put in two lineups and not identified.
O'Donnell also told reporters outside court that his client "absolutely maintains his innocence."
Littlejohn "feels like a scapegoat," the lawyer said. "He's upset. He knows his face has been published everywhere across the country" -- a reference to a mug shot released earlier this week by authorities.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told WCBS-TV Wednesday night that the St. Guillen murder investigation hinges largely on forensic evidence at this point. Littlejohn is still in custody for a parole violation.
Detectives searched Littlejohn's home in Queens for evidence for a third straight night Wednesday. This time they packed up clothes and other materials.
Investigators are still waiting for the results of DNA testing that could link - or exonerate Littlejohn, a 41-year-old bouncer who has served jail time in the past for various crimes.
He was a bouncer at the Falls, a bar in Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood where St. Guillen, a Mission Hill native, was last seen alive February 25. She was found raped, strangled and suffocated in Brooklyn 17 hours later.
St. Guillen's friends have set up a Web site in her memory. It's called
Justice for Imette. It gives people an opportunity to pay tribute and keep track of the investigation.
