Radio DJ Charged With Poisoning Wife In Waltham

WALTHAM (CBS4) ― A former Waltham man was arrested Monday and charged with poisoning his wife last year in Waltham. 31 year-old James Keown has been living most recently in Missouri, where he is a radio talk show host.

The Middlesex District Attorney says Keown and his wife Julie, also 31, moved to Waltham from Missouri for business last year.

In September of 2004, Julie was admitted to Newton –Wellesley Hospital with flu-like symptoms, according to police. Over the past four months, she had been suffering varying degrees of such symptoms, which had been treated by several doctors.

The following day, medical personnel determined that Julie had ethylene glycol in her system, a chemical that is commonly found in anti-freeze. An antidote was immediately administered. Prosecutors say that James was putting chemicals in his wife's Gatorade and food.

Julie's family went to authorities on September 7th and told Waltham Police that they were suspicious that she might have been poisoned -- the same day the hospital informed police that Julie was being treated her and suspected she was poisoned.

Julie slipped into a coma and died on September 8th. At the time of her death, the medical examiner ruled it as a homicide. During an autopsy on September 9, 2004, the cause of death was not ruled upon -- citing further investigation and toxicology results.

Following his wife's death, James Keown moved back to Missouri.

Just recently, the medical examiner determined that she had been given a lethal dose of chemical eight to ten hours before her death.

District Attorney Martha Coakley says the motive appears to be financial. James' wife had a $250,000 life insurance policy, which he was not able to cash because the cause of death was still pending. If he is convicted, he will not be able to collect the life insurance policy.

Keown was arrested Monday morning in Jefferson City, Missouri after being indicted last week by a Middlesex Grand Jury on one count of murder.

Keown is a radio talk show host for KLIK News Talk 1240 in Jefferson City. He was arrested while he was on air Monday. Keown was taken out of his DJ seat during a commercial break.

A fugitive hearing for James Keown was held on Monday afternoon in Jefferson City. He waived extradition and is expected back in Masschuetts later this week.
