Elderly Driver Pleads Guilty To Hospital Crash

BROCKTON (WBZ) ― The elderly woman who crashed her car into Brockton Hospital back in October, killing a doctor and a secretary, will serve 18 months of probation after pleading guilty.

Jane Berghold, 77, of Rockland, pleaded guilty to motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation and negligent operation of a motor vehicle in Brockton District Court on Tuesday.

According to the district attorney's office, the judge sentenced Berghold to 18 months of unsupervised probation. Berghold will also have her license taken away permanently.

Dr. Mark Vasa, 58, of Norwell, chief of radiation therapy at Brockton Hospital and Susan Plante, 59, of East Bridgewater, a secretary in the radiation unit, were killed when Berghold crashed her car through the department's entrance on October 15. Police say she stepped on the gas instead of the brake.

The Brockton Enterprise reports Plante's son, Mark, was at Berghold's hearing. According to the paper, he said his family does not wish any future suffering on Berghold because of the crash.
