A Holliston High School football player died unexpectedly Friday evening after collapsing at a football scrimmage, school officials said in a letter to students and parents.
High school junior Joey Larracey collapsed after being hit in the chest on the field at Apponequet Regional High School in Lakeville Friday. After he was hit, he moved to the sidelines, saying he was dizzy. He then passed out and was rushed to a hospital.
His family said doctors discovered the teen's lungs were filling with fluid. He died a short time later.
"It's scary. It really is," said Larracey's friend, Dino Roffo. "It's a freak accident -- a million to one shot."
Holliston school officials said grief counselors will be on hand for students and the community Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The school was encouraging students to share their written feelings and expressions of sympathy in the main lobby of the high school. Officials said they will pass them along to Larracey's family.
"I went to see his parents this morning and they were shaken up bad," Roffo said. "There were lots of neighbors there, so they had support."
