The Boston mob hitman who is responsible for the murder of 20 people was given cash to start his new life after spending 12 years in prison.
John Martorano received $20,000 in cash from the government upon his release. Federal prosecutor Fred Wyshak claims the handout is not unusual for people who refuse the witness protection program.
According to Wyshak, putting Martorano in the witness protection program would have cost more.
The families of Martorano's victims say the cash payment is wrong.
Martorano's lawyers says his client's testimony helped put corrupt FBI agent John Connolly behind bars, force mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger to flee and keep Steven "The Rifleman" Flemmi in prison.
