A Marine helicopter pilot from North Attleboro who wasÂ
killed in Afghanistan last month was laid to rest Friday.
A funeral service for Capt. Kyle Van DeGiesen was held in the morning at St. Mary's Church, the parish where he grew up.
The priest who led the mass told Van DeGiesen's family and friends Kyle struggled with his faith during his last deployment, asking 'Where is God in the experience of war?'
In days just before the crash he was texting his father from Afghanistan.
Kyle's father wrote a letter to his son just days after he died.
A family friend read it during the funeral mass.
"I, in particular, have lost an integral part of my very being. Your premature departure has rocked my very foundation, shaken my inner core as to where I can no longer recognize it without some far-reaching assistance. You are my heart. You are my soul. You are my son."
The funeral was followed by a procession through town and burial at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
Capt. Kyle Van DeGiesen was 29 years old.
He leaves behind his pregnant wife and an 18-month-old daughter.
A fund has been established to help his family.
